It’s always impressed me how flexible we can be in order to avoid inconsistency. The ability to filter, rearrange, ignore, reinterpret or simply make up new “facts” to support our previously held positions and maintain consistency is something a moderately intelligent person can do “on-the-fly” without missing a perceptible beat in a conversation.
This avoidance of inconsistency is deep and it’s this tendency that forms the basis of habits and binds us to thoughts and conclusions even those that we might not have had much to do with forming or considering for ourselves.
